Back in November 2025, Wendy, General Manager of USL, proposed conducting thorough market research, especially on bag products in Europe and America, to innovate USL’s backpack designs and functionality. Therefore, starting in January 2026, USL’s marketing department began collecting innovative bag styles from the market. After nearly five months of research, we collected over 1000 bag products and compiled this 2027 Bag Design Trends Analysis Report based on these innovative bags.
We have summarized the latest trends in design, functional innovation, and style evolution in the bag industry for 2026, for industry professionals and bag enthusiasts to reference.

2027 Bag Design Trends Analysis
Trend 1: Technical Outdoor Elements Popular in Everyday Bag Designs
Modern people’s lifestyles are no longer as monotonous as before. They might cycle to work in the morning, go to the gym during lunch break, and go hiking on weekends. For them, multifunctional bags that can meet the needs of different scenarios are more important.
Faced with these needs, “gorpcore” (functional outdoor style) is increasingly valued in everyday bag design. Components such as securing systems, load-bearing webbing, and external ropes are no longer exclusive to outdoor backpacks like mountaineering and hiking backpacks; they are beginning to be integrated into the design of everyday backpacks.
Trend 2: More Modular Bag Structures
Fixed bag structures are increasingly unable to meet current usage needs, while modular designs allow users to freely combine and adjust the bag’s functional configuration according to their needs. For example, attaching a gear bag to the bag for camping or detaching the attached waist pack for lightweight travel. This more flexible structural design is becoming increasingly popular.
Modern bag modular design is reflected in the following aspects:
● Airbag Compression System: Bags with airbag compression systems can flexibly expand storage space, ranging from 22L to 60L, meeting storage needs for different scenarios from daily commutes to outdoor travel.
● Detachable Accessory Pouches: The combination design of the main bag and mini pouches allows users to choose freely according to their needs.
● Flexible Compartmentation: Adjustable internal compartments allow for customized storage layouts. This design is more widely used in camera bags and first-aid kits.
● Modular External Storage System: Tool bags, first-aid kits, and other equipment can be externalized using webbing and buckles, effectively increasing the bag’s usable space.
Trend 3: Sustainability
The bag industry is increasingly emphasizing sustainability in design and manufacturing, including material selection, production processes, and after-sales service.
● In terms of materials, bag brands are increasingly opting for recycled fabrics such as recycled nylon and polyester.
● In terms of production processes, bag manufacturers are using CNC cutting machines to reduce fabric waste, using water-based adhesives or coatings instead of solvent-based chemicals, and choosing PFC-free (perfluorinated compound) waterproof coatings instead of traditional DWR treatments.
● In terms of bag services, free repair services are offered in stores instead of repurchases, reducing waste.
Key Design Details for Bags in 2027
In addition to changes in design trends, design details are also different.
Handles
Handles are one of the most frequently touched structural parts of a bag. Changing the shape and material of the handles can create different visual effects and user experiences. For example, leather handles enhance the texture, woven rope handles are more suitable for outdoor use, and silicone handles are more suitable for sports bags.

Webbing and Cords
In outdoor bags, elastic drawstrings are mostly designed with fixed “X” or “diamond” patterns on the front of the backpack, almost becoming a visual standard for outdoor bags. But now things are different. You can see drawstrings with different directions, start and end points, and interlacing methods, making the bags more design-oriented.

Contrasting Zippers
A striking contrasting zipper can quickly grab the consumer’s attention, especially for bags with a generally subdued color scheme. Moreover, it’s a cost-effective solution for both brands and manufacturers. Changing zipper colors is inexpensive; improving product recognition and memorability through low-cost design changes is very wise. Leading brands like Gregory and The North Face have already adopted this method and proven its feasibility.

Extra Helmet Holder
Adding an extra helmet holder to hiking backpacks, outdoor adventure packs, and mountain biking packs frees up internal storage space for other essentials. The helmet holder’s placement in the front pocket not only makes it easy to access but also promotes ventilation and reduces odors.

Water Bottle Side Pockets
Water bottle side pockets are typically found on backpacks, but with the increasing popularity of shoulder bags and chest bags in outdoor and commuting settings, designers are adding water bottle storage pockets to these bags using various methods such as elastic mesh pockets, magnetic snaps, and side slip pockets, creating a new market.

Shoulder Straps
Shoulder straps are crucial for carrying comfort. Market research shows that more and more outdoor backpacks are using perforated EVA shoulder straps. These straps effectively reduce the overall weight of the pack without sacrificing load-bearing capacity, while also improving breathability and comfort.

2027 Bag Design Trends
Ultra-Light Minimalist
Primarily using light colors like white and beige, combined with high-performance lightweight mesh fabrics such as Dyneema and X-Pac, the overall design is very simple, effectively highlighting the bag’s inherent quality.
Suitable Styles: Ultra-light Hiking Backpack/ Lightweight Everyday Backpack/ Minimalist Commuter Backpack
Technical Outdoor
Utilizing classic outdoor colors like dark blue and military green, combined with external webbing systems, elastic drawstrings on the front panel, and multi-point fasteners, significantly maximizing storage space.
Suitable Styles: Tactical Backpack/ Mountaineering Backpack/ Hiking Backpack/ Ski Backpack
Vibrant Color Blocking
Using high-saturation colors like orange, blue, and red as the main colors, large blocks of color create a strong visual impact. Many young people love backpacks with striking color blocking.
